The Refreshingly Low-Tech Content Brought to Us by Quarantine

Quarantine Log: Day 38. I say 38 because it was that many days ago when Adam and I turned around en route to the Algiers airport and ditched our trip to Valencia. Cancelling a trip made shit real, but we still went in to the office for a few more days after that. But we’ve […]

How to Host a Cocktail Contest Party

Adam and I recently hosted our 4th Annual Holiday Spirit Party and it was our most successful yet. It’s a holiday soiree with a cocktail making competition mixed in. We started this annual tradition back in Jerusalem after being inspired by another Foreign Service couple who have hosted a holiday dessert competition for well over […]

A Jungle-Inspired Bar Nook

When we moved into our Algiers home, I did what we always do and set to rid the place of the clunky and fancy government-provided furniture. I did, however, decide to keep a wood desk that was in the house. It wasn’t bad, especially after I switched out its shiny chrome knobs for matte black […]

A Desert Party from a Magazine Spread

It’s officially the holiday season here in Algiers. Our Christmas tree is up, our house is aglow in twinkle lights, we are going to lots of parties and eating our weights in decadent foods. We are preparing to host our Fourth Annual Holiday Spirit Cocktail Contest Party in just a few short days and I’m […]

New Blog Name! (This Time for Good)

Welcome to the first blog post on The Next Dinner Party. You’re at the same old blog, more or less, on which I have been posting since 2012. Back then I called my blog Yemen Em. Then it was The Dame in Spain. Most recently it was Em in Jerusalem. If I were to continue […]

My Perfect Tel Aviv Day

The saying goes that Jerusalem is about 40 miles and 200 years away from Tel Aviv. So its always a welcome reprieve to drive less than one hour from the monochrome ancient city of Jerusalem and to arrive in colorful and modern Tel Aviv, with its beachy vibes, exposed butt cheeks (it’s the year of […]

The Best Cocktails in Jerusalem

I think it’s safe to say that after two-and-a-half years in Jerusalem, I’ve tried most of the best cocktails in the city. That’s not saying a whole lot, because Jerusalem isn’t particularly known for creative cocktails and cool bars, although Tel Aviv is. We mostly drink cocktails from our own bar cart, which always features […]

Waterfalls, Wine, and Whisky in New York

After nearly a month in the U.S., I’ve been back in Jerusalem for a bit and finding it difficult to get back into my regular groove. And so working out and writing are two things that seem to have fallen off (thus the lack of posts, and my lack of muscle tone). It’s been a […]

Day Trip to the Galilee

I’ve been at the new job for a little over a month now, and while it’s been interesting so far, it hasn’t left me much time to write (as evidenced by the lack of updates on this blog). I figured I’d come home and write after work, and I totally would if I didn’t suffer […]

Five Great Israeli Wines

Readers of this blog: You know I like wine. And at all three of our Foreign Service posts — Sana’a, Madrid, and now Jerusalem — wine has been something of an issue. First wine was an issue in Yemen because there was none. It’s a dry country where booze is haraam, but us crafty Americans […]

I’m so glad I had this vintage rug I bought in Ghardaia, Algeria shipped to our rental in Princeton, NJ because how good does it look in this pretty, sunny bedroom? I’ve got a lot of thoughts on how you can buy home furnishings on vacation to add some flavor and soul to your house. Follow my design Insta and check out my most recent newsletter “What to Buy for Your Home When you Travel.” And speaking of which: What’s your favorite home thing you’ve brought back from a trip?
If you open your photo stream and sit down and write what you did each month for the previous year, I think you will be astounded at all you did. In 2022, I moved from Algeria to Princeton, N.J. where I’m embracing an academic-adjacent life, small town charms, and the proximity of New York City. I also ate a good deal of oysters. New blog post up on NextDinnerParty.com taking a look back at a year that moved alchemically fast.
New blog post up (on NextDinnerParty.com) about our best week ever in Algeria: When 23 musicians came together in the Sahara Desert for an epic concert, and four friends traveled to Algeria to be a part of it. And we hosted some of those incredible musicians at our house in the boho lounge.
(Heart)breaking news: DC Noodles has closed after 13 years on U Street. How many bowls of noodle soup have I slurped here? When I moved away, DC noodles spicy noodle soup is the single dish I craved the most and I’ve tried and failed to capture its sweet, sour, savory, peanuty taste countless times. I eat here on every single visit to DC, usually right away. Thanks for all the delicious meals, DC Noodles.
Started the year with a Tanzanian safari, rocked out in the Sahara desert at an amazing concert, biked around the Loire Valley, wrapped up our lives in Algeria, moved to Princeton NJ, relished in lots of quality time with family and friends. An eventful year! Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas 2022 from snowy Michigan!
