The Great American Friends and Family Tour

After being back home with my family in Michigan for probably the longest amount of time since college, I’m packing up to head out West.  Tomorrow I will reunite with Mr.YemenEm who’s been livin’ it up in Washington DC for the past 10 days, making me crazy jealous by going to bars galore and at […]

Four Nights in Nice

Day 1: We rolled in to the colorful, cool, Miami-esque town of Nice in the afternoon. Immediately I was struck by the colors. Aqua water, impossibly blue sky, cool old pastel buildings, and crisp white and pastel outfits. Which is just how I pictured the place, and why I packed specific “Nice” outfits in coral, […]

A Week in Provence

Day 1: Geneva (Which is obviously not in Provence, but bear with me): After several flights (Yemen>Bahrain>Frankfurt>Geneva), we arrived in Europe. Mr.YemenEm and I rented a car (stick shift, which I don’t know how to drive, so he’s the sole driver of the trip. Yay!) and spent the day in Geneva, which is stately yet […]

Ma’a Salama Yemen

I’m writing this from the Bahrain airport, sipping a ridiculously good draft beer in a smoky airport bar. It’s not that Stella is even a particularly good beer. It’s just that after not being in a bar for a long time, and not having a draft beer for a long time, this is a feeling […]

Happy Mother’s Day to my mom, Kathy, a great cook, who on the day I became a vegetarian at 13, started making me meatless versions of whatever she was making for the family. She always fueled my creative projects, from drawing patterns for the Troll clothes I had a real phase with, to sewing me a Renaissance dress when I (for some reason) chose to be a famous Italian prostitute for a school project, to setting up a mock dorm room in the basement months before I left for college so I could envision my new well-designed room. When I moved to DC, we talked on the phone after every job interview, roommate interview, and breakup. In short, she supports me in all I do, always has. (She was also a bad ass boss who started at the bottom and left her company as a VP). Being far from her in Michigan for the past 10 years has not been easy. She’s the top of the list of people I’m most excited to spend more time with when we move back to the US in a few months.
From a cappuccino to a chenin blanc on a sunny Paris day.
Just spend a lovely three days in the Loire Valley, biking around and stopping at castles. My favorite type of vacation: active enough to not feel guilty about all the cheese and wine.
Our Zanzibar trip, while fun, was a little weird, partly on account of a message we received accusing us of being well-known swingers. Read about Sexy & Seedy Zanzibar in a new post in my blog, TheNextDinnerParty.com
It’s Day 13 of the #tij100dayproject and I have loved creating one tiny beautiful thing each day. My small creative act is writing about a place in Algeria each day for 100 days (and posting them in my stories). I have a lot of vignettes from our recent trip to Ghardaia. That beautiful desert light and architecture made for some pretty pictures. #ghardaia #algeria
Came to this photogenic desert town for the storied rugs. (Hoping to find some beauts tomorrow). Today was mostly touring and snapping pics.
