Happy New Year, or Jet-lagged in Algiers

Happy 2020 Is Over! Or, Happy New Year! Whatever you call it. I need to admit something: I woke up today at 4pm. I am still sitting here, sun starting to set, in total shock. Mostly that my husband let me sleep until 4pm – something I’ve never in my life done. Hadn’t he the […]

My Washington DC Tried and Trues

I lived in DC for six years before starting this Foreign Service life. I had some of my most fun, formative, lonely, educational, frustrating, exciting, lovely times of my life here and coming back, not surprisingly, makes me so darn nostalgic. I just stroll around and picture 22-, 24-, and 26-year-old Emily walking home after […]

The Transient Nature of Perception

We recently wrapped up a three-week stay in Washington DC. And man, was it hard to leave (even though I was heading to Paris, oh beloved Paris). The three weeks was filled with catching up with good friends, family, cocktails, dinners, strolling the beautiful DC streets, museums visits, a ballet, a musical, and lots of yoga. […]

My Favorite Appetizers

A have a rotation of truly delicious vegetarian appetizers that I go back to again and again. These tried-and-true crowd-pleasers and wow-eliciters range from an easy bowl of nuts to the special occasion savory stuffed mushrooms that recall the flavor of Thanksgiving stuffing (with none of the dryness). There is a magical place in Washington […]

Before and After: Modern Gray Bedroom

Both my mom and I have been having a recurring dream for years where we discover hidden rooms in our homes that we never knew existed. One time I dreamed that my guy roommate had a bowling alley and a garden room through the closet in his bedroom. Here we were sharing a small two […]

Alone Time

A few weeks ago, Mr.Dame in Spain was away and I had the place to myself for six whole nights. I started to have flashbacks to all those years I was a single lady in Washington DC. Those times, oh those times, they were such a mixed bag of emotions. I’d be with my girlfriends […]

If you open your photo stream and sit down and write what you did each month for the previous year, I think you will be astounded at all you did. In 2022, I moved from Algeria to Princeton, N.J. where I’m embracing an academic-adjacent life, small town charms, and the proximity of New York City. I also ate a good deal of oysters. New blog post up on NextDinnerParty.com taking a look back at a year that moved alchemically fast.
New blog post up (on NextDinnerParty.com) about our best week ever in Algeria: When 23 musicians came together in the Sahara Desert for an epic concert, and four friends traveled to Algeria to be a part of it. And we hosted some of those incredible musicians at our house in the boho lounge.
(Heart)breaking news: DC Noodles has closed after 13 years on U Street. How many bowls of noodle soup have I slurped here? When I moved away, DC noodles spicy noodle soup is the single dish I craved the most and I’ve tried and failed to capture its sweet, sour, savory, peanuty taste countless times. I eat here on every single visit to DC, usually right away. Thanks for all the delicious meals, DC Noodles.
Started the year with a Tanzanian safari, rocked out in the Sahara desert at an amazing concert, biked around the Loire Valley, wrapped up our lives in Algeria, moved to Princeton NJ, relished in lots of quality time with family and friends. An eventful year! Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas 2022 from snowy Michigan!
We hosted our 6th Annual Holiday Spirit Cocktail Contest Party this past weekend. Back in Algiers, this tradition grew to epic proportions (live bands, 80 guests, a kitchen staff). Hosting in our one bedroom Princeton apartment was significantly less grand but still extremely festive and fun. (Click on link in bio if you’re like “what IS a cocktail contest?”
