Is an MFA in Creative Writing Worth It?

A final trip to Paris last month marked the end of my dream graduate school experience. Now, I just need to find a spot to hang my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree from New York University. And finish my book. Oh, and start paying off my student loans, which are substantial. And so, now […]

My Grad School Reading List

I submitted my graduate school thesis, which is the first 70 pages of my novel. I feel pretty okay about it (not great, because my novel isn’t finished yet). I’ll head to Paris for one last time in July, but already I’m mourning this program ending. Do I really not get to go to Paris […]

Post-Paris Crunch Time

I recently returned from wonderful, romantical Paris, where I completed the fourth residency of my graduate MFA program in creative writing. (Just one more left!). This trip to Paris was especially good. Mr. Jerusal-Em came for a few days and we celebrated New Year’s Eve in the cozy home of friends, walked around Montmarte, and […]

The More You Learn, The Harder it Gets

I’m three-quarters of the way through the low-residency MFA program at New York University and I can say with some confidence that after three intensive residencies in Paris, monthly writing deadlines, and the mentorship of several accomplished authors, I am now a better writer. I can also say with confidence that because I am […]

Notes from Paris

I just spent ten intense and inspiring days in Paris as part of a New York University’s MFA creative writing program. I suspect it will take me weeks to process all the thought-provoking lectures and suggestions for my own writing that I received. Until more grand thoughts and plans of action emerge, here’s a quick […]

Higher Learning. With Croissants.

Last week, I woke up to an email that stopped my coffee cup dead in its tracks to my mouth. I applied to graduate school a few weeks before and there was an email from New York University telling me “Congratulations!” I got in. My first thought was “No one applied except for me.” While […]

Picking up the parents. Meant to have my camera out when they walked out of the gate, but sometimes it’s hard to remember to take pics. But parents are here all the way from Michigan, yay!!!
For our Rabat book club, we’re reading an English translation of a famous Moroccan autobiographical novel by Mohamed Choukri. My language-obsessed husband decided to read the original Arabic and use the French translation for reference. #teacherspet #amreading
Prepping butternut squash and ricotta ravioli for a Valentine’s Day dinner party. Also it’s not possible to take pretty food prep pics unless you really stage/it plan it. So until I have a professional food stylist and photographer following me around, I’m just gonna post poorly lit pics from my kitchen. #foodblogger #ravioli #vegetarian #pasta
One of the best things about being able to cook is when I crave something I can make it. All morning I thought about egg salad on pumpernickel and pea soup. And that was lunch. (Also yesterday I did an epic group trip to all the best produce and speciality stores in Rabat so I was stocked on fresh shucked peas, farm fresh eggs, and plump berries, which are totally in season right now). #vegetarian #foodblogger #rabat #morocco #moroccanpottery
I have yet to decide what I want to do with my empty balcony so for now I just turn an arm chair toward the sun to catch some rays during my afternoon tea and book. Boj likes the balcony too. Gus prefers basking in the chair. #bojiebaby #gustopherjones #morocco #earlgraytea #amreading
I feel like Anne Shirley would call this “The Path of the Bent Tree.” #anneofgreengables #rabat #morocco #hiltonpark
